<image:caption>We’ll take the next few minutes to talk about design and color observations collected by our team. As textile designers, we do spend a lot of time thinking about design and color. We’re always looking for images that are visually interesting, and we search for inspiration anywhere we can find it.

<image:caption>The tradeshows we attend are important for showing products or concepts. But we also use the shows as a vehicle for gathering feedback about what designers look for in a product. When we travel to a show, or with travel a rep, or just for vacation, we keep an eye out for design and color inspiration. We also read design blogs, go to exhibits, look at fashion, and even find inspiration in our day to day activities.

<image:caption>This slide shows the impact of cultures around the world, both past and present, on pattern. We all see how social media and technology allow us to travel the world fairly easily, & right now we’re seeing global influences on fashion, textiles, and interiors, with pattern motifs that play on design from the Greek and Roman and Ottoman eras, from African art, and South American pottery – kind of a mash-up of influences.

<image:caption>This slide morphs pretty easily from the culture club theme. These are related design motifs, but the difference is that the patterns on this slide have less of a tribal feel, are dramatically more clean-cut, more streamlined and simplistic. Some of them also have irregular repeats.

<image:caption>Taking geometry a step further, there are still a lot of surfaces with dimension…
In the upper left is a lighting fixture that can take on different shapes, depending on how you hang it from the ceiling, since it has multiple flexible points.
Around that photo are fabrics and clothing that either are dimensional or appear to be dimensional.
The green faceted dress at the top middle is made of vinyl, which is kind of interesting – it’s by Spanish fashion house Delpozo.
To the upper right you’ll see the design process for an origami-inspired chair, the Rolf Benz Origami chair by Formselle, and on the bottom right some very dimensional wall-coverings.

On the upper left is artwork by Mary Hong, and next to that Chilewich’s weathered placemats. There’s even a worn-looking trend of half-painted walls that you see in the lower left corner, being left to look intentionally unfinished.

The lamps on the upper-left are designed to look like asteroids, by Japanese designer Sugata Katachi. We’ve included a images by artist Nick Veasey, who does x-ray photography (his pieces are in the upper left corner of the slide - the man reading the paper, & below that the photo of the bus). Across the bottom is fashion & nature photography with these sheer effects, where one image is visible through another. We’re also seeing a less literal translation of transparency in products and interiors, like in the hanging lights at the top, or in the multi-colored glass walls of the Rainbow Chapel in Shanghai, shown on the upper right.

<image:caption>As 3D printing becomes more commonplace, so does the “look” associated with things that are made by additive manufacturing – a lot of perforated, dimensional surfaces with rounded edges. The dress on the upper left is actually moveable, being made of small interlocking parts. So at least it’s slightly more wearable than Iris Van Herpen’s pieces, one of which is in the upper right corner. The High Museum in Atlanta is currently exhibiting her work.
But as 3D printing evolves, surely this aesthetic will evolve too.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Dezeen magazine: “Robotic arms can be used to print in traditional materials, such as plastic, concrete or composites, or employed to weave or knit three-dimensional fibre structures. Researchers are also exploring how the high-performance fibres excreted by silkworms and spiders could be produced artificially, and Oxman's team will print the pavilion's structure using natural silk.”
From Design Milk.com: This dress is composed of thousands of interlocking components that were 3D printed as one, single folded piece at the NYC Shapeways factory.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We always love to see design at play. Here are a few pics of some whimsical furniture, like the 3-form tunnel in the lower right or the lego bed next to it. At the top left, the hand-crafted felted pieces are fun. The Prada photo, with the exaggerated herringbone design & an overly-patterned hand-bag, is a good example of playful design. Pop-art (like the comic-book chair) is very much feeling current. In the center, the room with all of the mirrors is a Parisian restaurant by Philippe Stark.

And you see this theme in interiors in all sorts of contexts – from literally having plant life inside hanging on the walls, to nature photography, to more stylized gestural outdoor motifs like the coffee table on the lower right, or in the lower center, the wallpaper from George Venson of Voutsa design.

The interiors on the upper left by Karim Rashid definitely have a neon flavor, as does the German hotel interior on the lower left. The hotel couches toward the center are lit by LED lights. <image:caption>Yellow in all forms seems to be sticking around, everything from soft butter, to saturated yellow, to a more citron-based color, to a bronzier version.
It provides a nice balance to cooler colors, like mixed with grays of course, or with cobalt (like in the runway pics at the bottom from fashion house Delpozo) or dark greeny-blues like is shown in the fabric pieces. In the center there’s an image of malachite – rendered in yellow…we saw this at a studio in NY at a trend presentation. Our group at Masland, for whatever reason, have had a couple of requests for malachite patterns & are seeing this mineral-look…

At the top center and top right, are examples of vivid furniture fabrics. That pieces in the upper right is from the art of living line.

It’s critical to remember that colors and patterns don’t have to be trend-base – they can simply be inspired, design that just works visually…
